Three years ago the European Parliament stopped the attempt to make software patents enforcable in Europe. An unprecedented community effort made it possible with a relative low awareness about the dangers among larger software companies. Since then litigation and patent traps have become a serious problem for the market and users of software. We need to reduce patent risks which impede innovation and investment.

Software patents are an impediment to innovation and an unjust threat to software developers as well as software users. On 6 July, the European Parliament fortunately rejected a proposal for a software patent directive, but our fight goes on.
Under the influence of the patent system and big industry lobbyists, the European Union is on the verge of making a huge mistake: to pass a law that would legalize software patents.
